Lucas (Yoga Elder) ~ Senior Examiner and Guest Teacher
Luke was introduced to yoga asana at his junior
school by a school friend and to zen meditation at Judo classes in the
In his teens, he suffered from alopecia areata, a
form of stress related patchy baldness. After many unsuccessful
hospital appointments, he decided to take matters into his own hands
and investigated alternative healing options and found that headstands
combined with techniques discovered in a book called "Psychosomatic
Yoga" by Jon Mumford + allowing direct sunlight to the patches proved
to be a very effective healing approach.
This led to a passion for alternative approaches to healthy living
which included attending yoga classes available within adult education
throughout the 1970's.
Work and social pressures and growing family
demands meant that yoga took something of a back seat in the early
1980's but discovery of the Iyengar Yoga Institute, Maida Vale, within
walking distance of his workplace rekindled his enthusiasm and this
discipline prepared him for teacher training which commenced in 1988.
He completed the British Wheel of Yoga (BWY)
Teaching Diploma in 1991 and also completed a professional
qualification in anatomy and massage with the well known Osteopath
Michael Kern at Regents College, London in 1990.
"The taste of a grain of mustard seed is worth a
thousand words" is a phrase that guided Luke's approach to his Shamanic
and Tantric Yoga journey for many years, explore, explore explore.
Attempting to combine these work-skills with a
young family and corporate work life proved to be overwhelming and Luke
had a breakdown in 1995.
The outcome was traumatic but ultimately good for
Yoga locally, as it freed him to focus solely on his yoga path as all
other avenues seemed to close down.
During this time he discovered systematic
approaches to therapeutic yoga via the "Yoga for Health Foundation",
Ickwell Bury and went on to formally further his Yoga teaching skills
by successfully completing the BWY Diploma Course Tutor Training.
He was a successful BWY Diploma Tutor. His
ex-students are now teaching and running their own centres throughout
the world and, of course, his ex-students include Paula Mayura and
Landa Ananda Love!
He was also appointed, Specialist Advisor (Yoga)
for the Adult Learning Inspectorate at about this time.
Family ill-health commitments curtailed this second
'career path' and for a while Luke felt very much in the wilderness.
It was at this time Luke met Allan Oakman, an
extraordinarily talented Yoga teacher and 'Touch for Health'
practitioner and Derek once more became the student. Qualifying as a
Touch for Health practitioner and learning much about positive thinking
and teaching in the process!
Luke uses these skills acquired over a lifetime to
teach "Therapeutic Yoga" at Mayura Yoga Studio and is involved with the
final assessment process of student yoga teachers at the school.
He is also, a B.A. (Open University), a qualified
Reiki Master and a qualified Psychosexual Somatic Therapist (PST).
He is currently doing post graduate PST training
with the master healer Rex Bronwyn.
His formal Tantra training includes personal
sadhana training in Tantric Kriya Yoga with Swami Vedantananda
Saraswati and Cobra Breath Initiation with Martin Jelfs and Hanna Katz.
